Who is eligible for membership?
Juniors and seniors enrolled full-time at Green High School are eligible for consideration as a member of the National Honor Society. Students must meet the scholastic requirement of a cumulative grade point average of 3.600 in order to be eligible.
If my child meets the scholastic requirement, what next?
Students who meet the scholastic requirement are notified in September, and are required to then complete a rigorous selection process. The process gathers a variety of information about the candidate's character, service and leadership. That information is then presented to the Faculty Council, a five-member panel of teachers appointed annually by the high school principal (names of Faculty Council members remain anonymous). Students who are selected for membership are then notified, and invited to attend the annual induction ceremony.
My son/daughter is only a freshman, but we hope he/she is eligible as a junior. What should we do?
Those who think they may be eligible for membership as a junior or senior, should begin the planning process as early as possible. It is recommended that the student become involved in a variety of school and community service opportunities. While we obviously don't encourage students to perform school and community service simply for the sake of membership, the National Honor Society does seek members who are well-rounded individuals in the school and community. Keep a record of any school or community service performed, as that will be required during the selection process. It is important that the student maintain a grade point average of 3.600 or higher from the start of the freshman year to the end of the sophomore year. Finally, students are encouraged to maintain high standards of character and leadership in the school and community.
What are the requirements if my child is inducted into National Honor Society?
Once selected for membership into this prestigious organization, members are required to maintain the standards that warranted their selection and, in most cases, assume additional responsibilities. Click the button below to view member expectations. Members who fail to fulfill these membership expectations may be subject to discipline and, in some cases, dismissal from the chapter.
My son/daughter was a member of the Junior National Honor Society. Does that mean he/she will be a member of the high school chapter?
No. While the Junior National Honor Society and the National Honor Society are both sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Administrators, membership in the junior chapter does not mean the student will be a member of the high school organization. All students must complete the selection process at the high school level.
Our family just moved to Green, and my son/daughter was a member of National Honor Society at his/her previous school. Does this membership transfer to Green?
If the student meets the scholastic requirement (3.600 cumulative GPA), the membership does transfer if the student was a member in good standing at the previous school. A letter from the previous school's National Honor Society adviser is required before the membership can be transferred. Parents are encouraged to contact the advisers to discuss the membership transfer.
My son/daughter is enrolled in post-secondary classes. Will this affect his/her membership.
While all members of the National Honor Society are required to meet certain expectations & requirements of membership, students who are enrolled in post-secondary classes will be given some flexibility. If this is the case, the student will be required to meet with the chapter advisers to discuss options and accommodations what will be made. Members who are enrolled in post-secondary classes may be required to complete additional chapter or individual service hours to make up for the time missed.
